Wood Street Mission is a charity based in Manchester City Centre, aiming to relieve poverty in Manchester and Salford and improve the lives of those affected by it. They typically provide families with basic everyday necessities that they are unable to get however, at Christmas time they go the extra mile for low income families.
Manchester has one of the highest rates of poverty in the UK, with 35.5% (36,000+) of children under 16 living in poverty (Manchester Family Poverty Strategy 2017-2022). Wood Street Mission’s incredible work has helped thousands of families since they began but there is still a huge way to go with decreasing the number of people living in poverty.
TopQuote have again donated some much needed gifts to the Wood Street Mission, mostly for teenage children as the charity had expressed their concern over shortage of presents for teens this year.
When dropping off the gifts to Wood Street we spoke with John, a volunteer for the charity. John explained that children are able to choose 3 gifts, varying from cars, clothes, beauty sets, teddies and much more. He told us about a family that had gone to Wood Street to choose some presents for Christmas and how emotional it was. The family were over the moon, due to it being the child's first ever Christmas present.
It really puts into perspective how unbelievably important the work that this charity does, and how lucky we are to be in the position to provide people less fortunate with things that we can often take for granted.
