One of the greatest aspects of our modern world is the ability to communicate more frequently and freely. This isn’t just limited to the advances in technology that have made it possible, it’s also the subject matter of the conversations we’re now having.
Mental health seems to be high on everybody’s agenda in recent times, and that has to be seen as a force for positive change. The ability to express ourselves, feel connected to those who may feel a similar way, and use our experiences to offer comfort and advice is a great foundation for helping us all reach a more balanced state of mind.
Money Matters (and Your Mind)
Financial concerns often loom as a negative contributor to one’s mental health. The start of 2022 has made this even more evident with such uncertainty surrounding the cost of living.
It’s difficult not to get weighed down by these concerns as we navigate our daily lives and try to be present for the people who rely on us. The truth is that it’s ok not to be ok. There is so much pressure and responsibility placed upon us to constantly look for the best way to react to situations that we can forget to look after ourselves.
Top Quote Top Three Tips
As ever, we’re here and ready to help with our Top Quote Top Three Tips for simple stress-busting that may gently help mental health issues in the right direction.
We all know that we perform many of our daily tasks on autopilot. Even the smallest journeys have the potential for us to be a little more aware, a little freer from distraction, and a little more connected to ourselves. Mindful Walking lets us make any trip, whether it’s a walk to the shops, the park, or even just around the house, into an exercise for positive mental health. Try to take a moment or two to move through your senses as you walk. How do your limbs feel as you move? What can you hear? What can you see? Allow yourself to be engaged by the senses and not by the thoughts occupying your mind. It’s such a simple way to pause and bring yourself back into the world around you.
Meditation can be quite a difficult nut to crack for many people. It may feel so at odds with the pace of our lives that it can appear to be an impenetrable superpower that we just don’t have the time to master. However, the foundations of certain types of meditation are built upon very simple methods of observing how we breathe. And this is something that we can all access quickly for an immediate stress-relieving benefit. All you have to do is stop and breathe in for a count of seven, then out for a count of eleven. This method has all kinds of positives for improving concentration, reducing anxiety in the moment, and even aiding a good night’s sleep. If you’re struggling with it, try dropping to three seconds in and five seconds out. As long as the exhaled breath is longer, you will start to see it working pretty much straight away.
For many of us, it will be no surprise to learn that we are our own worst critics. All of the thoughts that we tell ourselves over the course of the day, or even worse, in the middle of the night, are never two-way conversations. They are so one-sided that it’s impossible to get any real perspective. However, it feels great to talk them through with another person. Releasing your thoughts into the world to a trusted friend, family member, or loved one can be such an important exercise. It doesn’t have to be a huge affair either. Just a quick phone call or coffee will do the world of good. And you know yourself that it genuinely is no burden for the person that you’re talking to, because at the same time you can offer to do the same thing for them. This really is an exercise where everybody wins, and you’ll leave the situation feeling a little lighter.
There is no doubt that these are challenging times for the vast majority of us. But hope is everywhere, and you shouldn’t have to look very far to find it. All it takes is that first step to seek it out and maybe try something a little different in your day.
