5 Best Places to Visit for a Winter Break

With one in three people in the UK being affected by Seasonal Affective Disorder (see article here), it’s no wonder that Brits are increasingly booking winter breaks. There has been a 16% year-on-year increase in holidays being booked in the winter time (read about it here), so we thought that we would help our readers keep their sanity intact during this chilly season and recommend the warmest places to visit this December if you are craving some winter sun.

  1. Malta, Republic of Malta
This wonderful island enjoys the Mediterranean climate and has the highest average sunshine hours in Europe! Temperatures in December are typically 17-20°C so you’ll be sure to be comfortably warm whilst escaping the British winter frost. There’s also plenty to do in Malta as you can visit some incredible beaches with crystal clear sea water or even get a boat over to Malta’s sister islands, Gozo and Comino.

  2. Fuerteventura, Canary Islands
With average temperatures of 18°C and long hours filled with sunshine, this canary island will be sure to provide you with plenty of vitamin D to help abolish your winter blues. If it’s relaxing winter breaks that you are after then there are many beaches for you to choose from. On the other hand, if you would like to do lots of activities there are a few nature parks to take a hike through and sand dunes to see where you can enjoy a camel ride.

  3. Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Although Dubai is typically perceived as a lavish holiday, you can fly from the UK to Dubai for a brief break at incredibly reasonable prices. With the average temperature being 21°C and flight time only being 6 hours, it’s worth considering if you are wanting to chase some sun this season. Offering incredible water parks, beaches and shopping, you will never find yourself bored in Dubai!

  4. Lanzarote, Canary Islands
Well known for its year-round sun and high temperatures, Lanzarote is a go-to for Brits when it comes to wanting some sun in the winter.  Lanzarote also has some beautiful volcanic scenery, such as Timanfaya National Park and you can also visit César Manrique’s home, so as well as glorious sun you can also see some art and history while you are there. Winter holiday-makers will experience an average of 22°C in December, providing a perfect warm break when you feel you need it most.

  5. Marrakesh, Morroco
Visiting Marrakesh in the winter is ideal for those wanting to partake in lots of sightseeing and activities. The humidity and heat can often get too much for many visitors in the summer, so the lower temperatures and warm breeze make December-February an ideal time to visit. You can go quad biking through the desert, visit the Yves Saint Laurent Museum or see the souks without overheating whilst still getting a much needed winter break.
